Explore Georgian Home Architecture in Wilmette IL

Georgian architecture began in England and was named for the multiple monarchs named George during the period of 1714 to 1830. Architects including Christopher Wren and James Gibbs drew inspiration from Renaissance architecture in establishing the style. The resulting Georgian homes, ranging from small cottages to grand estates, are all symmetrical and stately. Small details such as decorative quoining at corners and front doors framed by columns add to the grandeur. Shutters frame the many windows on the front and other facades.

Given its popularity in England, it is no surprise that Georgian architecture began appearing in America as well, including in North Shore Chicago and Wilmette IL. This style was combined other types of American residential styles, creating  unique adaptations. Typically with Georgian homes the front door is centered and the windows are spaced evenly on both sides. The grid pattern of the facade extends as an organizing principle within.
