Explore Cape Cod Home Architecture in Wilmette IL
Originating in the northeastern United States, this quintessential American style was actually developed in the 1600s by early settlers from England. The homes, which are known for their gabled roofs and plain fronts, were inspired by thatched cottages that were common at the time in England. However, they adapted this style to stand up to the harsh winters of New England, building large central chimneys with the rooms clustered around it for heat and light. The exteriors featured dear shingles which helped insulate the homes against the cold, and the steep roofs quickly shed the rain and snow.
Named for the Massachusetts coastline the Cape Cod style fell out of popularity and then was reintroduced in the 1920s by Boston architect Royal Barry Willis. Since adapted to modern life, it remains a compact and affordable single home option that is particularly suited to the cold climate of North Shore Chicago. Newer Cape Cods in Wilmette often feature dormer windows to take advantage of the extra space under the steeply pitched roof. Over the years the austere facades have become slightly more detailed, but the best specimens of this style are still fairly simple.
