Explore Tudor Home Architecture in Lake Forest IL

Tudor homes have a very distinct look: a steeply pitched roof, several front-facing gables, and brick exteriors with some portions of stucco and decorative half-timbering. The Tudor style is defined as a revival of English domestic architecture from 1600-1700, which featured Medieval and post-Medieval elements. This Medieval influence can be seen in the tall, narrow windows with multiple panes, which are sometimes diamond shaped, on the facades of Tudor homes.

The irregular exterior of Tudor homes made the interior design a lot more flexible than in other more symmetrical styles, allowing for more varied room sizes and ceiling heights. Interior spaces often feature dark wood details in the form of ceiling beams and wall panels. Tudor homes are very evocative of an English manor on the exterior and the interior.

The Tudor style became very popular in the North Shore Chicago and Lake Forest area in the 1920s, but they were quite expensive and time consuming to build and required experienced craftsman to execute some of the intricacies of detail. This led to the style fizzling out a bit after World War II when people needed quickly built, affordable housing. The North Shore Chicago area is home to many magnificent Tudor style specimens.
