Willard History

Willard is probably best known for the Willard Residential College and the Frances Willard House Museum. They are in the center of this small neighborhood but you will also find a Whole Foods Market, Target, and several restaurants and shops just minutes from most homes in Willard.

The Frances Willard House, situated at 1730 Chicago Avenue in Evanston,  holds the distinction of being a National Historic Landmark. It operates as a museum that showcases the history of the National Woman Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). Built in 1865, this house was once the home of Frances Willard, a figure in both the temperance and feminist movements until her passing in 1898. Fondly referred to as Rest Cottage, it provided Willard with a retreat amidst her schedule of advocacy work and organizational responsibilities.

Frances Willard relocated to Evanston in 1857 to attend Northwestern Female College. Following a career in education, she returned to Evanston in 1871 to work at Northwestern University. However, disillusioned by the university's treatment of women she resigned from her position in 1874 and devoted herself entirely to advocating for temperance and women's rights. In 1874 Willard played a role in establishing the WCTU. Served as its inaugural president while transforming her residence into an unofficial hub for the organization. Over time she expanded the house to accommodate her family and fellow WCTU members.

Upon her passing, Willard left her home to the WCTU which eventually designated it as their headquarters by 1900. Subsequently, a museum dedicated to preserving Willard's legacy was established on site. The home showcases Carpenter Gothic architecture with its board and batten siding expansive bay windows and several inviting porches. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1965 it is currently accessible for guided tours to the public.
