Explore Prairie Home Architecture in Evanston IL
Chicago and North Shore Chicago is known for its Prairie architecture that was created by Frank Lloyd Wright. Boxy and low slung, these homes were designed to serve people’s needs without looking too flashy. Prairie architecture in Evanston draws influence from the Arts and Crafts movement, a contradiction to the excesses of the Victorian era and the technological advances of the Industrial Age.
Homes of the time period often had closed off rooms meant for separate functions. Wright desired to open up the flow of the house, and conceived the entire first floor as a single room. Many other architects were inspired by Wright’s designs, and Prairie homes became very popular in the North Shore Chicago area and particularly Evanston.
The key elements of Prairie homes are horizontal lines, brick exteriors, cedar siding, built-in furniture, simple materials with natural finishes, flat and cantilevered roofs, and open spaces. Windows are often positioned in rows to create the appearance of a glass wall. Organic geometric patterns derived from natural elements, such as wheat, are often used. Prairie style is also influenced by Japanese prints, and this linear nature guides everything from the form to detailing.
